I recently nearly bricked my Garmin-Asus A10 phone. The case is very common: Root the phone, using it for a while and then perform a master reset. Then after all, the only message “Close the battery cover to complete first time setup” appears. And you seem can do nothing with your phone.

It took me almost a month leaving my phone out in the dust with that shitty fault. I even bought a new phone, a Motorola Defy which pleased me so much, d’oh, but that’s a different story. Now is the part you might want to know.

I decided to give it one more try this morning. Here’s all the steps I find nescessary to reproduce the sequence:

- Insert your SIM. You need a SIM with G/E/H (read: Internet access) working out of the box with your phone before.
- Make a call from another phone to the number of the above SIM. Line will be busy but you’ll see one notification from your A10.
- Pull it down, open it and you’ll have your Phone, Contacts screen opened.
- Go to Contacts, press Menu and the Accounts
- Add a Google account, Next, Next, Agree blah blah and then voilà, you regain access to the launcher.
- From here, you still can’t reflash your phone with the original .update. To do it, plug it to your computer, turn on ADB (USB debugging) and Unknown Programs from Applications Manager.
- Install Z4Root.apk via ADB, re-root the phone if it’s not rooted.
- Type those lines:

adb shell
su
mount -o remount -r -w /dev/block/mmcnandblk0p3 /system
/system/bin/busybox cp /system/bin/busybox /system/xbin/busybox

- Reset your phone, copy the original .update file to /sdcard/Garmin/Update folder and perform an update.

You might notice a request Superuser permission from your phone. Allow it

Good luck with that If you have any questions, don’t hesitate.

I’ve been digging SO MUCH into OSX86 recently. I’ve been through the crazy moment, and pleasure as well. I managed to install OSX86 successfully on my PC, and failed on my Laptop. Here’s some must-know facts, as far as I know, that I would like to share with you. Hope this will help people with issues similar to my encountered issues.

Legal: To install Mac OS X on your PC is illegal unless you have a license (per machine) from Apple. And you will have a patched (hacked) kernel to run it too. You will find some useful information from an IRC server at fusion.osx86.hu. This is a nice community. And if you use a hacked version and update with Mac’s software update, your OS will not boot again.

CPU: To install Mac OS X you will need at least a CPU supports PAE and SSE2. SSE3 is recommended too. To know which instructions set your CPU are capable of, you can use some program like CPU-Z or Everest.

Hard disk: (P)ATA hard disk drives is supported. Almost SATA hard disk is supported except the MCP5x/6x SATA Controller of nForce nVidia mainboard. If you have that kind of mainboard, you should use an IDE or external USB HDD to install OS X on to. Or you will just leave it as I left my laptop.

kexts: Kernel extensions are build similar to drivers to make your PC’s hardware running well in Mac OS. If your hardware is not working, or being malfunction, you should find proper kext to make it run. The kext might be existed, or not. Everytime you have new kexts installed, you have to make sure those kexts have the right permissions and the kext cache is cleared.
The easiest way to fix kexts permission is go for sudo diskutil repairPermissions / on your terminal.
And to clear kext cache, boot with -f parameter.

CI/QE: Core Image and Quartz Extreme is two video acceleration functions available in Mac OS. To enable it with your Video Adapter, you have to install Titan, Natit or NVInject. If you are using a AGP card, you might have to install AGPGart kernel extension as well.

BSD: Mac OS X use a BSD-liked system, so you should prepare some minimal *nix knowledge. The most common command is cp (copy), rm (remove), mv (move/rename).

That’s it for today. I will update if I found something else.

UPDATE 2007, Oct 15:
If your keyboard didn’t work, boot your system with -s parameter and type these

cd /System/Library/Extensions/ApplePS2Controller.kext/Contents/Plugins
mv ApplePS2Mouse.kext ApplePS2Mouse.kext.bak
mv ApplePS2Trackpad.kext ApplePS2Trackpad.kext.bak
reboot now

Then boot your OS with -f to clear the kext caches. Your keyboard will work again

Everybody is tired of these annoying flash-based ads came from Yahoo! Messenger. If your ADSL router is not responding or your Internet line is down, it would be more than a p.i.t.a for the “This page could not be found” page.

Fortunately, there’s a way to remove these annoyances.

Create a text file and name it whatever you want. I assume it is newtext.txt. Then paste these lines into your file

@ECHO OFF
TITLE Remove ads from Yahoo Messenger 8
> %TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO REGEDIT4
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO.
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\Pager\YUrl]
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO "Messenger Ad"="*"
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO "Webcam Upload Ad"="*"
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO "Webcam Viewer Ad"="*"
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO "Webcam Viewer Ad Big"="*"
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO "Webcam Viewer Ad Medium"="*"
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO "Change Room Banner"="*"
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO "Conf Adurl"="*"
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO "Chat Adurl"="*"
>>%TEMP%.\noYMads.reg ECHO "Y Content"="*"
REGEDIT /S %TEMP%.\noYMads.reg
DEL %TEMP%.\noYMads.reg
ATTRIB -R "%PROGRAMFILES%\Yahoo!\Messenger\Cache\urls.xml"
ECHO "" >"%PROGRAMFILES%\Yahoo!\Messenger\Cache\urls.xml"
ATTRIB +R "%PROGRAMFILES%\Yahoo!\Messenger\Cache\urls.xml"

Quit your Yahoo! Messenger. Rename the file to newbat.bat and double click to make it run. Open your Y!M again and voilà, these ads were gone.

If you installed Yahoo! Messenger on the other folder than the default “Program Files”, replace %PROGRAMFILES% with your new location.

2007/11/01: With the new Yahoo! Messenger 9, you have to do one more step (applied for Windows 2000 and above only)

Go to your Yahoo! Messenger folder, then Messenger\Caches, find the file urls.xml, right click, choose Properties. Open Security tab and then perform a Deny Write for every group or username in the list. Click OK and open Yahoo! Messenger again.

Hey guys, look at this thumbnail. Is it good? If you feel it, go with me to find some basic information about Windows tweaking. In this article, I will tell you about Visual Styles tweaking (by famous uxtheme.dll method), Tango Icon Patcher (by vertigosity) and Samurize – a nice and powerful docking program.

The first thing you need to do, is download uxtheme.dll into your computer and replace the file C:\Windows\System32\uxtheme.dll with it. You can skip this step if you’re sure that your uxtheme.dll was patched before, or you’re a guru . If you can not delete the original file, try rename it to something else like uxtheme.dll.bak and then copy the new file to that directory. If you can’t rename the old file, try logging in to your Windows using Safe Mode (by pressing F8 insanely when your PC started) and then do what you want with it.

Once you had your uxtheme.dll patched, you can install whatever Windows theme (also known as Visual Styles) you can find. The visual style was used in my screenshot is Tango Inspirat by Vichair. Go grab it if you like it. You can also find the great wallpaper Green Hills by Daxius on DeviantArt.

You can skip this second part, because it’s really short. Just download Tango Icon Patcher and apply it. This is the greatest icon patcher I’ve ever seen and I think I should stick with it forever. All icons are from Tango Project, but vertigosity did make a wonderful port to Windows. Install it and you can forget the boring default Windows icons.

And then, we can now focus on the third part: Installing and configuring Samurize to make it looks smooth. Go to Samurize Homepage, download the latest Samurize and install it on your computer. You can skip Server feature and some sample scripts/plugins as we don’t really need them. After the installation completed, open Config Tool and Import this package. You may be asked for your NIC card and/or some other info but I believe you can understand and answer them all.

We need to modify the imported configuration a little bit to fit your settings. Go to the directory that you’ve installed Samurize (mostly C:\Program Files\Samurize), and then navigate to Config/Glass folder. You’ll find a file named Glass (slumpurized).ini there. Open it with some useful text editor (I suggest SciTE, or Notepad++, or at least WordPad).

Replace all D:\Samurize with your path to Samurize. It will be C:\Program Files\Samurize for default installation.

Replace all VMXX0006 with your Zip Code (if you are US resident), or your weather.com city code. If you’re not sure about this, go to weather.com, and search for your city. If the result came up, you’ll see your city code in the address bar. It will be formed of your nation code (2 chars) + XX + your city number (4 numbers). For example, Madrid will be SPXX0050.

Replace all Metric with English if you’re more familiar with Fahrenheit than Celcius degree.

Find this text DLLFunction=getMessageCount and fill up their next parameters. Param 1 will be your Gmail account, Param 2 will be your password and Param 3 is False. You can find more information about this plugin here.

You’re done. Launch Samurize Client and then select Config -> Glass -> Glass (slumpurized). You’ll see what you’ve done

Note: I’m not the author of any plugin or configuration in this article, I just mix them up. The Glass configuration was made by Em7 and it’s included in the latest version of Samurize. If you have any question, feel free to drop it here. I hope you’ll be satisfied with the new look of your Windows XP.
